Baya® Marisa is a modern red-fleshed apple variety, developed by the Bayerisches Obstzentrum (Bavarian Fruit Centre) in Germany. We are grateful to Dr. Michael Neumüller of Bayerisches Obstzentrum for the following information and hope to be able to try some of these apples ourselves next season.
The apples appear on the outside to be typical medium-sized red apples with some attractive lenticels (white specks on the skin). However when the apple is sliced open the unusual and striking red-flesh is revealed.
Red-fleshed apples are rare but not unknown. Red Devil is a popular garden apple variety in the UK which has some bleeding of the red skin colour into the flesh, a characteristic sometimes found in apples related to Discovery. However the extent of the red colouration in Baya® Marisa is far greater. Some crab-apples also have red-flesh, but they usually have unacceptable eating flavour. Baya® Marisa apparently has a good flavour.
Baya® Marisa is a heavy-cropping apple variety (thinning of the fruitlets in late spring is beneficial). Like most apple varieties it is self-sterile and requires a pollination partner. It promises to be a useful apple variety for gardeners, with some resistance to scab.
Baya® Marisa is picked at the end of September and will store in normal conditions until January.
Baya® Marisa is a registered apple variety in Germany and the European Union.
This variety is marketed in the UK as 'Tickled Pink'.

- 01 Apr 2012 ALEM, Netherlands2011 first year, very nice pink/red blossom, picked 4 apples which were app. 80mm, full red blush and almost internal for 90% red. Taste was good, a bit tart, like Boskoop, probably good cooker. Moderat growth. Survived -17 C this winter, now a lot of flower buds.
