All about apples, pears, plums, and cherries - and orchards where they are grown

Tiny Orchards

TINY ORCHARDS is a suburban backyard fruit orchard located in the coastal town of Saco, Maine.  We grow 217 cultivars, mostly great old heirlooms that you won’t likely ever find in your local supermarket. Our orchard is comprised of 112 apples (including 25 cider apples), 67 pears (including 10 perry pears), 20 plums, 9 apricots, 6 peaches and 3 cherries, each with something unique and worthwhile to offer.  Our trees are grafted onto dwarf or super-dwarf rootstocks to allow us to accommodate as much variety as possible in the tight quarters we’ve got.  Apples are grown on P.22, G.41, or G.935; pears on Pyro™ 2-33; cherries on Gisela 5; peaches on Krymsk 1; plums on Krymsk 1 or Marianna 2624; and apricots on Krymsk 99.  Apples and Pears are trained to an irrigated Open V-Trellis System, trained as Tall Spindles or Super Spindles.  Over the last decade, we’ve imported 50 cultivars through the USDA Quarantine program.  On this side of the pond, 30 are unique to our orchard.  These heirlooms came from collections in England, Wales and the Czech Republic and all have proven to withstand a blustery Zone 5a (-20°F) Coastal Maine winter. We’re soon to be selling trees of nearly every cultivar, as well as offering custom 8-tree "Tiny Orchards" of our apples, all on dwarf and super-dwarf rootstocks.  These postage stamp orchards will tuck neatly into a 5-foot by 12-foot area in your yard, be easily maintained at a height of 8 to 9 feet and produce as much as 240 lbs apples/year (5 ½ bushels) when mature.  We’re thrilled with ours.
